Organic food costs a bit more than you would normally pay at a grocery store, and we would like to tell you why.
The Feed: it takes more than 2 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of chicken, and around 3-5 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of pork. All the grain and forage that we feed is certified organic, and is almost triple the price of conventional feed. Therefore, the cost to feed the animals will be 3 times as much
The Labour: it takes more time-per-animal to raise animals this way. Conventionally, where 20,000 chickens or 10,000 pigs are kept in one barn, a single person can feed them all in a few hours a day. Raising them outside in small groups takes more time. We need to be paid for our time just like everyone else does, or we won't be in business long.
Buying better food costs more money, there isn't any way around it. Thank you for being understanding.
We value our customers and will always try to be transparent with you about our prices, and we will not raise the price without letting you know the reasons why we have to raise it.
Buying a whole or half an animal costs less than buying individual cuts of meats. This is because of the cost to raise the animal and the basic processing cost. But when we cut the animal into different cuts, the processing cost goes up. Plus, some cuts of meat are better than others, and there are fewer bones left so the animal weighs less. We still need to make the same amount per animal plus pay for the extra processing cost. This raises the cost per pound of the individual cuts.
